Çankırı Salt Mine

The salt deposit at Çankırı has been worked since at least the Hittite period, and industrial extraction over the past century has left a system of galleries hundreds of metres into the hillside - wide, dry, dust-free tunnels with walls of grey and translucent rock salt. Part has been opened to visitors: you go in by vehicle or on foot along the main gallery to a chamber where sculptures have been carved from the salt, including figures, arches and a small mosque cut entirely in the rock, along with a chapel-like hall and a section with seating. The air underground is stable, cool and salt-laden, and there has been a persistent local claim that spending time in it helps respiratory conditions - the halotherapy idea, which is used commercially in salt mines in several countries and whose clinical evidence is thin and contested. Anyone considering it for asthma should read the medical literature rather than the tourist material.
