Queen's Park Savannah

The Savannah is about a hundred hectares of open grass in the middle of Port of Spain, bought from an estate in 1817 and kept open ever since, with a road running the whole way round it that gives the park its other name, the world's largest roundabout. It is where Carnival's main stage is built, where football and cricket are played through the year, and where coconut vendors and food stalls set up along the northern edge in the evening.

What you actually see

• The circuit - the road running the full way round the open grass.
• The Carnival stage - the ground where the main Carnival competitions are staged.
• The evening food stalls - coconut, corn soup, doubles and oyster vendors along the edge.
• The Magnificent Seven - the row of grand houses along the western side.

When to go

January to May is the dry season and the most comfortable. Carnival in February or March takes over the whole park. Evenings are when the food stalls work.

Honest expectations

There is little shade on the open grass and midday is hot. The circuit road is busy and crossing to the middle takes care. The park floods in heavy rain during the wet season.

The Magnificent Seven line the western side, and the Botanic Gardens are north.
