Queen's Park Savannah

The Savannah is about 110 hectares of open grass in the middle of Port of Spain, bought from an estate in 1817 and kept open ever since, with a road running the whole way round it that gives the park its other name, the world's largest roundabout. It is where Carnival's main stage is built, where football and cricket are played through the year, and where coconut vendors and food stalls set up along the northern edge in the evening.

When to go

January to May is the dry season and the most comfortable. Carnival in February or March takes over the whole park. Evenings are when the food stalls work.

What to expect

There is little shade on the open grass and midday is hot. The circuit road is busy and crossing to the middle takes care. The park floods in heavy rain during the wet season.

The Magnificent Seven line the western side, and the Botanic Gardens are north.
