Las Cuevas Bay

Las Cuevas is the next bay east of Maracas along the north coast, a long crescent of sand backed by forested hills, and it takes its name from the caves in the headlands at either end. It is quieter than Maracas and has lifeguards, changing facilities and a few vendors, but far less of the weekend circus. Leatherback turtles nest on parts of the beach in season, and the water is generally calmer than at its neighbour.

When to go

January to May is driest. Turtle nesting runs from March to August. Weekends bring crowds though fewer than Maracas.

Things to know

Sandflies are a real problem here, particularly in the late afternoon; repellent matters. Facilities are basic and vendors are few. Currents can be strong despite the calmer appearance.
