Getting thereBoat from Chaguaramas to Gaspar Grande island; guided visit
EntryCharged with guide

Gaspar Grande is one of the islands in the Bocas off Chaguaramas, and the caves on it are cut into limestone that was quarried here in the nineteenth century. A stepped descent leads into the main chamber, where stalactites and columns hang above a pool of clear seawater connected to the sea below and rising and falling with the tide. Guides take small groups in from the jetty, and the boat trip out is part of the visit.

What you actually see

  • The tidal pool - clear seawater in the cave floor, rising and falling with the tide.
  • The formations - stalactites and columns in the main chamber.
  • The stepped descent - the built stair down into the cave from the surface.
  • The boat trip - the crossing through the Bocas from Chaguaramas.

When to go

January to May is driest and calmest for the crossing. Tours run at set times and must be arranged. The cave is cooler than the surface.

Honest expectations

The descent is a long stair with many steps and is slippery. Tours must be arranged in advance and boats are chartered. Swimming in the pool is not always permitted.

Nearby

Chaguaramas is on the mainland, and Chacachacare is west.
