Kéran National Park

Kéran covers savanna and gallery forest along the Kéran river in northern Togo, a park that held elephant, buffalo and a substantial antelope population before poaching and occupation of the land reduced it sharply. Some animals remain and the main road runs through the park, so it is at least easy to reach. Hippos are in the river and the bird list along the gallery forest is still good. The park was declared in 1950 and covers around seventy thousand hectares in its current boundaries.

When to go

November to March is the dry season and wildlife concentrates near water. The rains from April make tracks difficult. Early morning is best for animals.

Practical notes

Wildlife has been very heavily reduced and sightings of anything large are unlikely. Parts of the park are occupied and farmed. Infrastructure is minimal.
