Muang Boran, the Ancient City

The Ancient City was begun in the early 1960s by a Thai businessman who wanted the country's architecture gathered in one place, and the result is stranger and better than that sounds. The grounds are shaped roughly like a map of Thailand, with each structure placed where its original stands, so cycling north to south becomes a compressed tour of the country. Some pieces are scale reductions of buildings that still exist, some are full-size reconstructions of monuments long gone, and a few are genuine old timber buildings moved here and rebuilt. There is a recreated canal market, a temple standing in a lake, and long stretches of quiet path where you meet nobody at all.

When to go

Cool-season weekdays are the best combination: open ground, little shade in places, and far fewer visitors than at weekends. Arrive at opening and take a bicycle or a cart, because the site is measured in kilometres rather than metres. Late afternoon light suits the lake structures, but closing comes early in the evening.

Honest expectations

It is enormous and mostly unshaded, and in hot months a full circuit is genuinely punishing. Purists find the mix of copies, reductions and originals confusing, and signage rarely tells you which is which. Some buildings are locked or under repair, the cart tours move fast, and getting there from central Bangkok eats a good part of the day.
