King Power Mahanakhon is the tower with the pixelated notch cut down its side, and its top floors are open to visitors. A lift climbs to an indoor deck on the seventy-fourth floor, then stairs and escalators lead out to a rooftop at around 314 metres, where the barriers are glass and the wind is constant. The talking point is a transparent tray set into the roof deck, where you stand on glass over the drop with a queue behind you. What you actually see is the scale of Bangkok: the river bending through it, the towers of Silom and Sathorn below, and flat grey sprawl running to the horizon in every direction with no natural edge to stop it.

What you actually see

  • The rooftop deck - open air at around 314 metres with glass barriers.
  • The glass tray - a transparent floor panel over the drop, queued and timed.
  • The indoor deck - the seventy-fourth floor with seating and full-height glass.
  • The river bend - the Chao Phraya curving through the city at dusk.

When to go

Sunset slots are the most expensive and the most crowded; the hour after dark is calmer if not cheaper, and the city reads better once it is lit. Air quality is worst between January and April, when haze can flatten the view entirely. Book a timed entry online and check conditions the same day rather than committing days in advance.

Honest expectations

Tickets are expensive by Bangkok standards and the rooftop bar prices are steeper again. The glass tray involves a queue, shoe covers and a staff photographer, which strips most of the drama out of it. Haze and heat shimmer spoil the view often enough to be a real risk. Tripods are not allowed, and the roof closes without warning in storms.

Nearby

Chong Nonsi station, the lunch streets of Silom and the Chao Phraya piers.
