Kham Chanot

Kham Chanot is a wooded island of about twenty rai in a wetland in Ban Dung district, covered in chanot fan palms and reached by a bridge, and it is one of the most actively visited sacred sites in the north-east. Belief holds it to be the residence of Phaya Sri Sutho Naga and a gateway between the human world and the naga realm below the Mekong basin; a spring on the island is treated as holy water and taken away by visitors. Numbers rose sharply after lottery-related claims spread on social media in the 2010s, and the site now receives very large crowds, with an extensive commercial fringe selling offerings, garlands, robes, lottery predictions and amulets. It remains an active devotional site for the people using it. Visitors are asked to dress modestly, not to wear black, and to observe the conduct expected at a shrine rather than treating it as a curiosity.

When to go

November to February. Weekends and Buddhist holy days bring very large crowds. Two to three hours. Dress modestly and avoid black clothing.

An active devotional site, not a sight - behaviour is expected to match. Extremely crowded at weekends. Heavy commercial selling around the entrance. Lottery-related claims drive much of the traffic and are treated seriously by visitors.
