Mnemba Atoll

Mnemba is a small island a few kilometres off Zanzibar's northeastern shore, surrounded by an oval reef that is the best-known dive and snorkel site on the island. The island itself is a private resort and is closed to visitors, but the reef around it is a marine conservation area open to boats from the mainland shore. Green turtles nest on the beaches, dolphins are common in the channel, and the drop-offs on the eastern side carry the better diving.

What you actually see

• The reef - an oval of coral around the island with drop-offs on the eastern side.
• The turtles - green turtles nesting on the island beaches and feeding on the reef.
• The dolphins - bottlenose and spinner dolphins common in the channel.
• The snorkelling shallows - shallow coral gardens on the sheltered side.

When to go

June to October and December to February have the best visibility. The long rains from March to May bring poorer conditions. Mornings are calmest for boats.

Honest expectations

The island is private and landing is not permitted; the trip is boat-based only. The reef has suffered bleaching and heavy visitor pressure. Dolphin boats sometimes crowd and chase the animals, which is worth avoiding.
