EntryFree tours; tastings charged

Kavalan was built in 2005 by a drinks company with no whisky history, in a subtropical climate that everyone said was wrong for it, and the humidity and heat turned out to work in an unexpected way: the spirit matures far faster than in Scotland, with a very high angels' share, so a three-year Kavalan can taste older. It won a blind tasting against Scotch in 2010 and has collected awards since. Tours cover the stills and the warehouses.

What you actually see

  • The stills - the copper pot stills in a purpose-built subtropical distillery.
  • The warehouses - casks maturing fast in heat and humidity, with heavy evaporation.
  • The fast maturation - the climate effect that makes young whisky taste older.
  • The tasting bar - the range sampled at the visitor centre.

When to go

Year round; tours run daily and are free, with tastings charged separately. Weekends are busy. Booking ahead helps for the guided versions.

Honest expectations

The basic tour is short and heavily branded. Tastings and bottles are expensive. Weekend crowds fill the visitor centre.

Nearby

Yilan city is northeast, and Wufengqi is north.
