Jinshan Old Street

Jinshan's old street has been a market since the Qing period and the thing that fills it now is duck: a shop selling steamed duck by weight where the tradition is that customers bring their own chopsticks and bowls, or borrow from a rack, and eat standing at long tables. Around it the street sells sweet potatoes, taro, seafood and pickles. Jinshan also has hot springs, an old temple and a beach a short way off.

When to go

Year round; weekends are extremely busy and the duck shop queues. Weekday lunchtimes are calmer. The north coast is windy in winter.

Honest expectations

The duck shop queue at weekends can be an hour. The street is short. Parking in Jinshan is very difficult at peak times.
