Jibei Island

Jibei is about three square kilometres of low ground in northern Penghu, some five and a half kilometres off the main island, and its southern tip runs out into a spit of shell sand about seven hundred metres long that shifts with the seasons, with shallow turquoise water on both sides. In summer the island fills with day trippers and every water sport on offer. Old stone fish weirs ring the shore, and the interior is a quiet village of coral-stone walls once the beach crowd has gone.

When to go

April to September is the season; boats stop in winter wind. July and August are extremely crowded with day trippers. Weekdays are calmer.

Things to know

In peak season the spit is packed and the noise from water sports is constant. Boats are weather-dependent. Day trippers leave in the late afternoon, which is when the island is best.
