Muottas Muragl stands at about two thousand four hundred and fifty metres on the shoulder between the Engadin and the Bernina valley, and the view from it is the one used on most images of the Upper Engadin: the valley floor running away south-west with the chain of lakes - St Moritz, Champfer, Silvaplana, Sils - laid out in sequence toward Maloja. A funicular built in 1907 climbs to it. The hotel at the top was rebuilt in 2010 as a plus-energy building, producing more energy over a year than it consumes through solar, geothermal and heat recovery - the first such conversion of an Alpine mountain hotel. A philosophers' path and a marmot trail run along the shoulder.

What you actually see

  • The lake chain in sequence - four Engadin lakes running toward Maloja.
  • A 1907 funicular - the original line up the shoulder.
  • A plus-energy mountain hotel - producing more than it uses over a year.
  • Ridge paths - the philosophers' walk and a marmot trail.

When to go

All year; sunrise and late afternoon give the best light. Half a day.

Honest expectations

The funicular closes for maintenance between seasons. The summit is exposed and cold. The view is the whole attraction, so cloud removes the reason to go up. Restaurant prices are Engadin level.

Nearby

Pontresina and Samedan are below; Diavolezza is up the Bernina valley.
