Mannlichen

Mannlichen stands at 2,343 metres on the ridge dividing the two valleys, so both are visible at once - Lauterbrunnen's trench on one side, Grindelwald's broad basin on the other, with the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau facing across. The Royal Walk climbs a few minutes from the station to the actual summit and a viewing platform. The main draw is the path to Kleine Scheidegg: about four and a half kilometres, nearly level along the flank, taking an hour or so with the north face in view for most of it - which makes it one of the few genuinely easy high walks in the region and consequently one of the busiest. The Grindelwald gondola is among the longer lifts of its kind in Europe.

Honest expectations

The Kleine Scheidegg path is popular to the point of queueing in high summer. Lifts close between seasons and in wind. The ridge is exposed and colder than the valleys. Cloud is frequent.
