CERN Science Gateway

CERN sits on the Franco-Swiss border outside Geneva, and the Large Hadron Collider - a twenty-seven-kilometre ring about a hundred metres underground - is where the Higgs boson was confirmed in 2012. The Science Gateway, designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2023, replaced the old visitor buildings: two tubes raised on columns above the trees, holding exhibitions on particle physics, detectors and the questions the experiments are meant to answer, plus laboratories for school groups. Real hardware is on display, including a section of the original Synchrocyclotron of 1957. Entry is free. The web was invented here in 1989, and the machine Tim Berners-Lee used is part of the story told.

Honest expectations

The tunnels and detectors themselves are not open to casual visitors - the Gateway is the substitute, and underground tours are rare and heavily oversubscribed. Free entry, but guided tours must be booked well ahead. Closed on Mondays.
