Klimahaus Bremerhaven

Klimahaus opened in 2009 and is organised around a single idea: the eighth meridian east, the line of longitude that passes through Bremerhaven, is followed all the way around the globe and back, through nine places it crosses. Visitors move through built environments recreating each with its actual temperature and humidity, from a Swiss alpine valley to Sardinia, Niger, Cameroon, Antarctica, Samoa, Alaska and back, with the conditions physically produced, so the Sahel section is hot and dry and the Antarctic section is below freezing. Displays cover the people living at each point and how climate shapes them.

When to go

Year-round; it is indoors and works in any weather, which suits the North Sea climate. School holidays and weekends are busy with families.

Practical notes

The route is a fixed sequence taking two to three hours. Temperature changes are real and clothing matters. It is aimed strongly at families.
