Bergun

Bergun sits in the Albula valley with a core of Engadin-style houses carrying sgraffito decoration, and its identity is bound to the railway: the Albula line, part of the Rhaetian Railway World Heritage site, climbs past the village through spiral tunnels and viaducts that gain height in a confined valley, and a railway museum in the village explains the engineering. In winter the road up to Preda is closed to traffic and turned into a sledge run - about six kilometres of descent, with sledgers taking the train up and sliding back down, floodlit several evenings a week. The Parc Ela, the largest regional nature park in Switzerland, surrounds the village.

Practical notes

The sledge run depends on snow and can close in poor conditions. The railway museum is modest. The village is small with few restaurants. Trains are the practical access; the road over the Albula closes in winter.
