Solliden Palace
The royal family's summer villa on Oland, an Italian-style house of 1906 with gardens open when they are away.

Queen Victoria of Sweden, who spent much of her life in Italy for her health, had Solliden built in 1903 to 1906 in an Italian villa manner - white, low, with a loggia - on the slope below Borgholm castle looking west over Kalmar sound. The royal family still uses it in summer, and Crown Princess Victoria's birthday, Victoriadagen, on 14 July, is marked here with the family meeting the public in front of the house. The gardens open to visitors for a season each year, laid out in three parts: a formal Italian garden with clipped hedges and a fountain, a Dutch garden of flower beds, and an English landscape section running into woodland. The house itself is never open.

Practical notes
The house is closed and always will be. The gardens shut when the family is in residence at certain times. Oland is very busy in July. There is an entry charge for what is a garden visit.
