Monteliusvagen

Monteliusvagen runs about five hundred metres along the top of the Sodermalm escarpment, part path and part boarded walkway, with the ground dropping away on the north side and the whole of Riddarfjarden opening in front: Gamla Stan and Riddarholmen church to the right, the city hall opposite, and Kungsholmen beyond. It is narrow, with benches at intervals and old wooden houses on the landward side, and it is a working residential lane rather than a viewing platform. Sunset from here is the standard Stockholm photograph. Steps come up from Sodermalarstrand below, and the walk continues towards Skinnarviksberget further west, which is higher and rougher.

• A route on to Skinnarviksberget - higher ground further west.

When to go

Year round; late afternoon and sunset are best. An hour.

Honest expectations

It is narrow and crowded at sunset, especially in summer. The walkway is icy in winter. It is a residential lane, so noise matters. There are no facilities on it.
