Pyramiden

At Billefjorden's head, Pyramiden stopped in 1998: the Soviet mining settlement - built as a showcase, swimming pool and cultural palace included - was abandoned nearly overnight, and the Arctic has curated it since, freeze-drying what is believed to be the northernmost Lenin bust in the world, the grand piano in the concert hall, and apartment blocks where kittiwakes now nest on every sill. Guided visits (mandatory, polar bears being the standing reason) walk the ghost boulevards under the pyramid-shaped mountain that named the town, the Nordenskiold glacier calving across the fjord as backdrop. A skeleton crew runs the small hotel for those who want the ghost town's midnight-sun silence overnight.

When to go

Summer boats (roughly June to September) and spring snowmobiles (March to May) are the two seasons; the hotel overnight adds the emptied-town hours day-trippers miss.

Practical notes

Guides are mandatory - polar bear country rules the archipelago and this is no exception; interiors open where safe, not everywhere. The preservation is decay in slow motion - handle nothing, and dress for Arctic wind regardless of forecast.
