Munneswaram is one of the five ancient Shiva temples in Sri Lanka associated with the Ramayana, where by tradition Rama stopped after the battle to be released from a curse, and worship here is documented back many centuries. The complex holds several shrines around a main Shiva temple with a painted gopuram, and it draws both Hindu and Buddhist worshippers. The August festival runs for a month and includes fire-walking.

When to go
December to March is the most comfortable for travel. The festival in August is the busiest and most intense period. Mornings and evenings are the main worship times.
Honest expectations
It is an active temple and the dress and behaviour rules are enforced; shirts are removed by men in some shrines. Photography inside is restricted. Animal sacrifice takes place at an associated shrine and disturbs some visitors.
