Kataragama
A pilgrimage town in the deep south sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Vedda alike, with a July fire-walking festival.

Kataragama is the most genuinely shared sacred place in Sri Lanka: the main shrine belongs to Skanda, worshipped by Hindus as Murugan and by Buddhists as the god Kataragama, with a mosque in the same compound and Vedda communities with their own claim to the site. Evening puja is performed daily. The Esala festival in July and August brings weeks of processions, kavadi dancing and, on the final nights, fire-walking by devotees who have prepared for it.

When to go
July and August bring the Esala festival, the busiest and most intense weeks. Daily puja happens year round at set times. November to April is more comfortable for travel.
Before you go
This is a working pilgrimage site, not a spectacle; photography during rituals and of penitents needs real care and is often unwelcome. During the festival the town is overwhelmed and accommodation is impossible without booking. Dress rules are strict.
