The Seu Vella was begun in 1203 on the hill above Lleida, on the site of a mosque, and completed in the transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic, with a cloister on the western side that is unusual in being larger than the church and in having open traceried arcades that give directly onto the plain, so it works as a viewing gallery. A bell tower of sixty metres stands beside it. In 1707, after the War of the Spanish Succession, Philip V converted the whole complex into a military barracks and it stayed one until 1948, which stripped the interior and left damage still visible. Restoration has continued since. A separate fortress, the Castell del Rei, occupies the same hilltop enclosure.

What you actually see

  • The open cloister - traceried arcades looking out over the plain.
  • The bell tower - a sixty-metre octagonal tower on the hill.
  • The transitional interior - carved capitals between Romanesque and Gothic.
  • The barracks damage - marks of two centuries of military use.

When to go

April to June and September to November; Lleida records some of the hottest summer temperatures in Catalonia and the hill is exposed. A lift from the town below saves the climb, and the site closes on Mondays.

Honest expectations

The interior was stripped during its use as a barracks and is largely bare stone. The hill is exposed with little shade. Lleida sees few visitors and services are geared to residents.

Nearby

Lleida's new cathedral and old town lie below; the Monegros and Aragon border are west.
