Monfrague National Park

Monfrague is a long quartzite ridge cut by the Tagus and Tietar rivers, with dehesa pasture and holm oak on the slopes below. It is the easiest place in Spain to watch large raptors, because the birds nest on cliffs that a public road passes directly beneath. The Salto del Gitano is the main one: a wall of rock across the water with griffon vulture nests at eye level, black vultures overhead and, with patience, Spanish imperial eagle and black stork. Nothing here needs a guide or a permit. A ruined castle on the ridge gives the wide view over the dehesa toward the sierras.

• The castle ridge - the ruin above the park with the long view across the dehesa.
• Black vultures - one of Europe's larger breeding populations, overhead most of the day.
• The dehesa - grazed oak parkland surrounding the park on all sides.

When to go

March to June is the breeding season and the busiest time on the cliffs, with long daylight and green ground. Autumn is quieter and still productive. Summer in Extremadura is severe, regularly above forty degrees, and the birds sit out the middle of the day. Early morning and late afternoon are the hours that count.

Honest expectations

There is very little infrastructure: a small visitor centre, a couple of villages and few places to eat. Without binoculars or a scope you will be looking at specks. The road viewpoints fill with tripods on spring weekends and parking is tight. Summer heat makes midday visits pointless and the walking trails unpleasant.

Plasencia and Trujillo are each under an hour; Caceres old town lies further south.
