Kapoeta sits in the dry southeast of South Sudan on the road toward the Kenyan border, the main town of Toposa country where cattle, beadwork and body decoration remain central to how people present themselves. The Singaita river runs beside the town and gold is panned in the country around. The Didinga hills rise to the southwest and the plains stretch east toward Kenya. The town sits on the route that runs east into Kenya toward Lokichogio, which has made it a trading point.

What you actually see

  • The Toposa - the community the town is the centre of.
  • The beadwork - the decoration central to Toposa dress.
  • The Singaita river - the water beside the town.
  • The dry plains - the country running east toward Kenya.

When to go

December to March is the dry season and the roads are best. The rains from April make travel difficult. Market days are busiest.

Honest expectations

There is little arranged for visitors and facilities are basic. Photography of people needs permission and payment is often expected. Travel in this region requires local arrangement.

Nearby

The Didinga hills are southwest, and the Kenyan border is east.
