EntryNational park

Boma National Park, spreading across the vast plains of eastern South Sudan towards the Ethiopian highlands, protects one of the greatest and least-known wildlife spectacles on earth. Across its immense savanna and floodplains moves an astonishing migration of well over a million antelope, huge herds of white-eared kob, tiang and Mongalla gazelle sweeping across the grasslands with the seasons, a migration rivalling the famous Serengeti in scale. Elephants, giraffe, lions and countless birds share this remote wilderness. Almost untouched by tourism, Boma is a place of raw, immense natural grandeur, a reminder of how much wild Africa still endures in one of the world's youngest and least-explored countries.

What you actually see

  • The great migration - the million-strong antelope herds on the move.
  • The white-eared kob - the vast sweeping herds across the plains.
  • The savanna wildlife - the elephants, giraffe and lions.
  • The wild plains - the immense, untouched grassland wilderness.

When to go

December to March, the dry season, is the most practical time to reach the remote plains and when the great migration is on the move; the rains make the region largely impassable. This is a genuine expedition destination, best undertaken with specialist organisation.

Honest expectations

Boma is exceptionally remote with almost no tourism infrastructure, so reaching it requires serious expedition-style planning and specialist operators, and it is not a conventional safari destination. As the setting for one of the largest wildlife migrations on earth, a scarcely known natural wonder rivalling the Serengeti, though, Boma National Park is an extraordinary and humbling wilderness for the intrepid.

Nearby

The Boma plateau and the vast eastern plains stretch around the park.
