Yeongneung Royal Tomb

Sejong ruled from 1418 to 1450 and is the most consequential figure in Korean history by most reckonings - his court produced hangul, the alphabet designed so that ordinary people could read and write, promulgated in 1446 and still the writing system of both Koreas; it also produced rain gauges, water clocks, celestial globes and an astronomical calendar computed for Korean latitudes rather than Chinese ones. He and Queen Soheon are buried here in a single joint mound, and the adjoining tomb, Nyeongneung, holds King Hyojong. The approach follows the standard Joseon arrangement of spirit road, ritual hall and terraced mound with stone figures. What is particular to this site is the outdoor display of full-scale replicas of the scientific instruments developed under him, set out along the path, and a museum hall covering the reign. The two tombs are linked by a forest path of about seven hundred metres.

When to go

April to June and October to November. Closed on Mondays. Weekday mornings are quiet; the site is well kept and rarely crowded.

Honest expectations

Visitors cannot approach the mound itself, only the terrace below. The instrument replicas are modern reconstructions. Yeoju takes ninety minutes from Seoul plus a local connection.
