Taekkyeon

Taekkyeon does not look like fighting at first. Practitioners move in a continuous stepping pattern called pumbalbgi, weight shifting from foot to foot in a triangle, arms swinging loosely, and the techniques emerge out of that motion - open-hand pushes, sweeps, trips and high curved kicks, aimed at unbalancing rather than striking through. The rhythm is closer to dance than to a hard style, which is deliberate: the historical form was contested as a village game, not as combat. It nearly disappeared under Japanese rule, and what survives descends largely from Song Duk-ki, who had learned it before the ban and taught it again from the 1950s; Chungju became the centre of transmission. In 2011 it became the first martial art anywhere inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. It is distinct from taekwondo, despite the similar name and some shared history.

• The unbalancing techniques - pushes, sweeps, trips, curved kicks.
• The dance-like rhythm - the reason it reads as a game.
• The Chungju lineage - where the transmission survived.

When to go

The Chungju world martial arts festival in autumn is the reliable occasion. Demonstrations also run at folk villages and cultural centres through the year.

Practical notes

There is no site to visit - this is a living practice seen at demonstrations and classes. It looks gentle and its effectiveness is not obvious to a first-time viewer. Explanation is usually in Korean only.
