Ondal Sanseong Fortress

Ondal Sanseong is a compact stone-walled fort on a hilltop above a bend of the Namhan River, some six hundred and eighty metres of wall enclosing a summit that commands the valley in both directions - the reason it was fought over between Goguryeo and Silla in the sixth century. The name comes from Ondal, the folk figure of the tale of Ondal the Fool and Princess Pyeonggang, said to have died here retaking the region; the story is legend layered on a real frontier. The walls have been substantially restored, and the point of the visit is the climb and the view rather than the archaeology: from the top the river runs below in a broad curve with mountains stacked behind. The path up is about thirty to forty minutes and steep enough to feel. At the base is a tourist complex with a cave and a drama set, ticketed separately, which most visitors do first.

When to go

April to June and September to November. Avoid wet days - the path is steep and the rock slick. Morning light is better for the river.

Honest expectations

The wall is mostly modern restoration. The climb is short but genuinely steep, with steps. The complex below is a commercial tourist site and unrelated to the fort in feel.
