Oksan Seowon

Oksan was founded in 1572 to honour Yi Eon-jeok, one of the principal Neo-Confucian thinkers of the sixteenth century, and it is among the nine seowon inscribed by UNESCO in 2019. It sits in a wooded valley on the Jagyecheon a good way outside Gyeongju, and its distinguishing quality is simply how little happens there: a stream running over flat rock beside the compound, old trees, the lecture hall with its open floor, dormitories, the shrine behind, and usually nobody. The library held a significant collection of rare books, some of them National Treasures, now largely in museum care. A short walk upstream is Dongnakdang, the house Yi Eon-jeok built for himself in retirement, which is worth adding. There is nothing to buy, nothing to queue for and no interpretation to speak of. For visitors coming from central Gyeongju's crowds it is the obvious counterweight.

When to go

April to June and October. Any weekday. Autumn colour in the valley is good and still uncrowded.

Before you go

Free, plain and small. There is no English interpretation and the rare books are elsewhere. Getting there without a car takes a bus and a walk.
