National Hangeul Museum

Hangeul is one of the few writing systems whose creation is documented: King Sejong's court promulgated it in 1446 with an explanatory text, the Hunminjeongeum, setting out that the consonant shapes are drawn from the position of the mouth and tongue that makes each sound, and the vowels from three symbols for heaven, earth and humanity. The stated purpose was that ordinary people who could not learn Chinese characters should be able to write. This museum, opened in 2014 beside the National Museum of Korea, is entirely about that - the invention, the long resistance from the scholar class who kept using Chinese characters, the nineteenth-century revival, the suppression under Japanese rule, and the typographic and digital life of the script now. It is free, compact, and there is a hands-on gallery where you can build syllable blocks. Because it explains the principle rather than showing relics, it works better than most museums for people who read no Korean.

It is a single-subject museum and small - an hour or so. There are few spectacular objects; the value is in the explanation. Free.
