National Gugak Center

Gugak means the country's own music, and this institution is its custodian - the direct successor to the Joseon court music office, holding the repertoire, the instruments and the training. Several things kept alive here exist essentially nowhere else: Jongmyo Jeryeak, the ritual music of the royal ancestral shrine; aak, the ceremonial court music of Chinese origin that survives in Korea in a form lost in China itself; and the folk and shamanic traditions collected in the twentieth century. The centre has several halls, the largest seating around eight hundred, plus a smaller theatre and an outdoor stage, and a museum of instruments that is free. Saturday afternoon performances are a regular fixture aimed at general audiences, with English programme notes. This is not background listening - court music is slow and unfamiliar, and a first encounter goes better with the programme notes read beforehand.

When to go

The season runs roughly autumn to early summer, with the Saturday series the easiest entry point. Book ahead for the main hall. Check the calendar - programming varies widely in difficulty.

Honest expectations

Court music is slow and repetitive by design and is not to everyone's taste on first hearing. The centre is in Seocho, away from the tourist areas. Some programmes have no English support beyond the printed notes.
