Myeongdong Cathedral

Myeongdong Cathedral was completed in 1898 on ground that had been a gathering place for Korean Catholics since the eighteenth century, when the faith arrived through books from China and spread without missionaries before persecution followed - the crypt holds the remains of martyrs from that period. The building is Gothic revival in red and grey brick, designed by a French priest, with a single spire, a rose window and a vaulted nave that is plainer inside than the exterior suggests. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Seoul and the symbolic centre of Korean Catholicism. Around and beneath the rise are a plaza, shops and cafés, and the Myeongdong shopping district and its street-food stalls start immediately below. It remains a working parish with a full Mass schedule.

• The brick Gothic exterior - the spire and rose window on the rise.
• The vaulted nave - the plainer interior under the arches.
• The crypt - the martyrs' remains beneath the church.
• The plaza - the terraced approach above Myeongdong.

When to go

Year-round; weekday mornings and early afternoons for a quiet interior. Sightseeing is not possible during Mass, and Sundays are busy throughout.

Before you go

It is a working cathedral first - dress modestly, keep quiet, and expect closures during services. The interior is simpler than the facade. The surrounding district is crowded shopping streets.
