Gwangmyeong Cave

The mine at Gwangmyeong opened in 1912, produced gold, silver, copper and zinc, employed a large workforce and closed in 1972. For decades the tunnels were used to store salted shrimp. The city bought the site in 2011 and reopened it as an attraction: several hundred metres of tunnel are lit and walkable, with a light installation, a mining history section, a small aquarium, a golden road, and a large cavern used as a performance hall. There is also a wine cellar, using the constant temperature to store Korean wines, with tastings. It stays around twelve degrees inside all year, which makes it a genuinely good option on a hot August day or in heavy rain - bring a layer. It is at the edge of Seoul and easy to reach.

What to look for

• The lit tunnels - several hundred metres of worked mine.

When to go

Any season - the temperature inside does not change. Best in midsummer heat or heavy rain. Closed some Mondays; weekends are busy with families.

Good to know

It is a themed attraction inside a real mine, with light installations rather than a historical tour - visitors expecting industrial heritage find it gaudy. Ticketed. Bring a jacket: twelve degrees is cold after ten minutes.
