Gwangju Biennale

The Gwangju Biennale began in 1995, the first of its kind in Asia, and its founding purpose was explicit: to honour the citizens killed when the city's 1980 uprising was suppressed, by making Gwangju a place associated with art and open exchange. That origin still shapes it - the curatorial themes lean toward the political and the socially engaged more than most biennales, and the city's own history is a recurring subject. It runs for two to three months in the autumn of biennale years - most recently 2024 and 2026 - centred on the purpose-built exhibition hall in Buk-gu with satellite venues around the city, and it regularly shows work that has not been seen in Asia before. National pavilions run alongside the main exhibition. Between editions the hall keeps a smaller programme. For anyone with a serious interest in contemporary art, this is the reason to come to Gwangju.

When to go

Autumn of biennale years, over two to three months. Weekdays are far calmer. Allow a full day - the satellite venues are spread out and the ticket covers them.

Good to know

It only runs every other year; outside that the hall has a modest programme. Contemporary biennale work is demanding and much of it is text-heavy. Gwangju is a long way from Seoul.
