Onggi are the large earthenware jars that stand on Korean roof terraces holding soy sauce, doenjang and kimchi, and the reason they matter technically is that they breathe: coarse clay with sand and organic matter fired at moderate temperature leaves the wall micro-porous, so air passes but liquid does not, which is what lets a fermentation continue for years without spoiling. Oegosan is where the trade concentrated - potters displaced in the 1950s settled here for the clay and the fuel, and at its height dozens of workshops ran. Several remain, along with a museum and the long climbing kilns that fire them. Potters throw the big jars by a coiling-and-beating method rather than on a wheel alone, which is worth watching if a workshop is in production. There is an onggi festival in spring. It is a working village, not a reconstruction, so what you see depends on the day.
What you actually see
- The working workshops - coiling and beating the large jars.
- The climbing kilns - long wood-fired kilns on the slope.
- The museum - how the porous wall makes fermentation work.
- The jar yards - stacked onggi across the village.
When to go
April to June and September to November; the onggi festival is in spring. Weekdays are when the potters actually work - at weekends you may find the workshops closed.
Honest expectations
It is a small working village, not a themed attraction, and on a quiet day there may be little activity. English information is limited. Buying a full-size jar is impractical to carry.
Nearby
Ulsan is 20 km away; the Bangudae petroglyphs and Ulsan's Daegok museum are in the county.
