Joseon kings and queens were buried in an arrangement that barely changed in five hundred years: a grass mound on a low slope with the hill behind it, stone guardians and a stone table in front, a T-shaped wooden shrine below, and a straight paved approach leading in from a red-painted gate. Donggureung holds nine of these grounds in one large wooded park, including Geonwolleung, the tomb of the dynasty's founder. Because the sites were protected for centuries as ritual ground, the forest around them was never cleared or built on, and the walk between the mounds through old pine and oak is as much the reason to come as the tombs themselves.

What you actually see

  • Geonwolleung - the founder's tomb, its mound left in rough grass rather than clipped turf.
  • The approaches - the two-level stone paths from each red gate to its shrine.
  • The stone guardians - paired civil and military figures, rams and tigers around each mound.
  • The forest - old pine and oak protected as ritual ground for six centuries.

When to go

Late October and early November give the best of the woodland, and spring is quiet and green. The site closes one day a week, usually Monday, so check before travelling. Mornings are calm and this works as a local walking park as much as a monument. Allow two to three hours to see several of the nine grounds properly.

Honest expectations

The tombs are formally similar to one another, and after three or four the differences are for specialists. You cannot approach the mounds themselves; viewing is from the shrine below, so the stone figures are seen at a distance. English signage is thin. It is a long walk on gravel with little shelter if the weather turns.

Nearby

Seoul is forty minutes west; Namhansanseong lies to the south.
