Daeseongdong Tombs

Gaya was a confederacy of small states along the lower Nakdong that lasted from roughly the first century to the sixth, sat between Baekje and Silla, and left almost no written record of its own - so what is known comes largely from cemeteries, and Daeseongdong is the most important of them. Excavation of the low ridge here produced the burials of the ruling line of Geumgwan Gaya at Gimhae, with iron armour, horse trappings, ceremonial ironware, and imported objects including bronze cauldrons of northern nomadic type and Japanese jade and shell ornaments - evidence that this was an iron-producing state trading across the sea rather than a provincial backwater. It is part of the Gaya Tumuli inscribed by UNESCO in 2023. On the ground you see mounds and a covered excavation shelter over exposed graves; the museum beside the site carries the finds and the argument.

When to go

April to June and September to November. The museum is closed on Mondays. It is rarely crowded.

Honest expectations

Outside the shelter it is grass and mounds - the museum does the explaining and going there first matters. Both are free. Gaya is unfamiliar to most visitors and the site assumes some interest.
