Planica Nordic Centre

Planica is a closed valley under the Ponce peaks where, in 1936, a jump of a hundred metres was first made and the sport of ski flying effectively began. The Gorišek brothers' hill built here has since carried a series of world distance records, most recently past two hundred and fifty metres, and the ski flying week each March fills the valley with tens of thousands of people. In 1994 Toni Nieminen landed the first jump beyond two hundred metres here. The Nordic Centre, opened in December 2015, has eight jumping hills, the only centre in the world with so many, and out of season it runs a wind tunnel, a zip line and a museum in the base of the hill.

When to go

March for the ski flying week, which is the main event. Year round for the centre, wind tunnel and museum. Summer is quiet and good for walking the valley.

What to expect

Outside competition days the hill is an empty structure and the visit is the museum and paid activities. The March event brings enormous crowds and traffic control on the access road. The wind tunnel and zip line are separately and steeply priced.
