Slovensky Raj, Slovak Paradise, is a national park of deep wooded gorges, tumbling waterfalls and karst plateaus in eastern Slovakia, famous for its adventurous trails that climb directly up the canyon walls beside the water on fixed ladders, chains and metal steps. It is one of the most exciting places to hike in Central Europe.

When to go
Late spring to autumn, when the gorge trails are open and safe; the ladder routes are usually one-way and closed or dangerous in ice. Autumn adds colour to the forest.
Honest expectations
The ladder-and-chain gorge trails are genuinely adventurous, needing a head for heights, fitness and good shoes, and can be busy and slow at peak times. They are usually one-way uphill. It is remote in eastern Slovakia.
