The Benedictines founded an abbey here in 1075 on a rock above the Hron, and the Gothic church and cloister they built in the fourteenth century survive. When the Ottoman frontier reached this valley in the sixteenth century the whole complex was enclosed in bastioned walls, so what stands is a Gothic monastery inside a fortress. The church keeps a carved Gothic portal and a winged altarpiece, and the site is one of the oldest religious foundations in Slovakia.

What you actually see

  • The Gothic church - the fourteenth-century abbey church with a carved portal.
  • The fortification - sixteenth-century bastioned walls thrown round the monastery.
  • The cloister - the surviving monastic ranges around the courtyard.
  • The Hron valley - the river and hills below the rock.

When to go

April to October is the main season; winter access is limited. Tours run to set times. The church is used for services.

Honest expectations

Access is by guided tour on a schedule and tours are in Slovak. Parts of the complex are in poor repair. The village has few facilities.

Nearby

Zvolen is northeast, and Nitra is southwest.
