Gola Rainforest National Park

Gola holds the country's largest surviving slice of the Upper Guinea rainforest - the ancient West African belt reduced elsewhere to fragments - and its canopy shelters the region's shyest royalty: pygmy hippos in the swampy streams, forest elephants moving like rumours, chimpanzees, zebra duikers and the white-necked picathartes nesting on rock overhangs. The bird list tops three hundred species, drawing serious listers to camps run with the forest-edge communities whose stake in the park is its long-term insurance. Walking here is green immersion - sightings earned, soundscape constant - in the company of guides who grew up reading it.

History

More than 20,000 hectares of the forest were logged between the 1960s and the 1980s, and it has since come under pressure from diamond and iron ore mining. From the 1990s the Government of Sierra Leone, the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds have run a project to protect it for the long term while improving the lives of forest-edge communities, with a similar arrangement across the border in Liberia's Gola forest, whose people share the same culture. President Ernest Bai Koroma declared the national park, the country's second, and Parliament enacted it in December 2010 by joining the Gola North, East and West forest reserves; it was officially opened in December 2011, and in 2025 it became a World Heritage Site as part of the Gola-Tiwai complex (Wikipedia, Gola Rainforest National Park).

When to go

November to April, the dry season, keeps trails and access roads workable; early mornings are the forest's talkative hours. The rains close much of the interior to practical visiting.

What to expect

The big mammals are present and mostly invisible - measure success in forest, birds and signs, not hippo selfies. Camps are basic and arrangements go through the park office and Kenema operators with lead time. Sweat, mud and repellent are the uniform.
