Tabuk

Tabuk stands on the old route north from Medina toward Syria, an oasis stop mentioned in early Islamic history, and its two principal sites reflect the periods that shaped it. Tabuk castle, rebuilt in its present form in the early sixteenth century under Ottoman administration and restored since, is a compact square fort with a courtyard, mosque and towers, now a small museum. The Hejaz Railway station is the other: the line built from Damascus toward Medina before the First World War ran through Tabuk, and the station buildings, workshops and rolling stock have been preserved as a museum. The city is the base for Wadi al-Disah, Tayma and the Aqaba coast.

When to go

October to April; Tabuk sits at altitude and winters are cold, with occasional snow, while summers are hot. Sites keep daytime hours with a midday break. The city is a stopover rather than a destination.

Honest expectations

Both sites are small and take about an hour each. Interpretation is mainly in Arabic. Opening hours include a long midday closure. The city itself is modern with little historic fabric beyond these buildings.
