Principe

The smaller, wilder sister - a biosphere island of jungle spires, empty golden coves and one unhurried town, kept green by design.

Principe is the two-island nation's dream half: a UNESCO-designated biosphere island where phonolite spires wear rainforest to their tips, roads give out quickly and the coastline alternates jungle cliffs with coves - Banana Beach's curve the famous one - that hold their gold sand empty for hours at a time. Santo Antonio, among the world's smallest capitals, runs on greetings and generator hours; old plantation rocas like Sundy layer in the cocoa history; and the island's development model has deliberately chosen low-volume, conservation-funded tourism, which keeps the whole experience feeling permitted rather than packaged.

What you actually see

  • Banana Beach - the golden curve under the jungle wall.
  • The phonolite spires - forested towers over the south's wilderness.
  • Santo Antonio - the tiny capital's pastel unhurry.
  • Roca Sundy - plantation history and cocoa's living present.

When to go

June to September, the gravana dry season, gives the most settled weather; whale months add sightings from the coves late in the year. Flights are small and few - fix them before dreaming further.

Honest expectations

Principe is priced by its protection - lodges run boutique-to-luxury with little middle, and logistics go through them or local guides. Infrastructure is minimal by intent: cash, patience and flexible days are the kit. The south's wild coast is boat-or-trek access only - the point, entirely.

Nearby

Sao Tome by air, and the biosphere's islets and whale channels.
