The Crossbow Corps

San Marino has kept a crossbow corps since the Middle Ages, and the Balestrieri are not re-enactors but a standing tradition: the corps trains year round and competes with the great Italian crossbow cities, shooting heavy fixed crossbows at targets across the Cava dei Balestrieri, a former stone quarry turned arena beneath the first tower. Tournaments mark the republic's key dates - most importantly the Feast of Saint Marinus on 3 September, the state's founding day - with flag-throwers, drummers and processions in Renaissance dress filling the old town around the shooting.

Summer holds the calendar: Medieval Days in late July and the founding-day tournament on 3 September are the peaks, with smaller displays on other summer dates. Check the events schedule when planning - outside event days the Cava is just a handsome empty arena.

Honest expectations

The tradition performs on a calendar, not on demand - arriving on a random Tuesday means no crossbows. Festival days pack the old town's narrow lanes and parking fills early; come up by bus or funicular. Events are genuinely local in character, which is their charm; expect Italian-language ceremony.
