Climbing Gros Piton

The Pitons pose for every Saint Lucia photograph; Gros Piton lets you climb into the frame. The trail starts at Fond Gens Libre - 'valley of the free people', a village founded by escaped slaves whose descendants now guide the mountain - and climbs 786 volcanic metres in about two hours of honest work: shaded switchbacks, then steep rock staircases, with lookouts opening to Petit Piton's spire and the Caribbean below. The summit's two viewpoints take in the south coast toward Vieux Fort and, on clear days, Saint Vincent on the horizon. The Pitons and their marine area form the island's UNESCO site.

When to go

December to May for drier footing; start by 7am any month - the lower slopes bake once the sun clears the ridge, and afternoon showers grease the rocks. The mountain closes in dangerous weather.

Honest expectations

It is a real climb: two hours up steep, uneven volcanic stairs and the same jarring descent - knees complain, and hikers in beach sandals get turned around at the centre. Guides are compulsory, local and worth tipping. The halfway point satisfies many visitors honestly. Petit Piton is the harder, riskier scramble and not officially encouraged.
