Eden Brown was being built in the early nineteenth century for a wedding, and the story told on Nevis is that the groom and the best man fought a duel on the day and both died, after which the bride's family abandoned the house and it was never finished. The stone shell stands roofless in scrub on the island's eastern side. It is the island's best known ghost story and locals will not go near it after dark.

What you actually see

  • The stone shell - the unfinished great house standing roofless.
  • The abandonment - a building left at the point construction stopped.
  • The duel story - the account of the wedding day that ended the project.
  • The overgrowth - scrub taking the site back around the walls.

When to go

December to April is the dry season. Daylight only, for practical reasons as much as any other. The site is on open ground.

Honest expectations

The ruins are unstable and unfenced and entering them is unwise. There is no interpretation and the track in is overgrown. The duel story is folklore rather than documented history.

Nearby

New River is south, and Mannings is nearby.
