Yuri Dolgoruky founded Pereslavl in 1152 and began the Transfiguration cathedral in the same year; his son Andrei Bogolyubsky finished it. It is small, single-domed, built of dressed white limestone blocks with a plain surface and only a modest carved band, and it is generally reckoned the best preserved of the handful of surviving mid-twelfth-century churches in north-eastern Rus - it has not been substantially rebuilt, unlike most of its contemporaries, so the proportions and masonry are close to original. Alexander Nevsky was born in Pereslavl in 1221 and baptised here, and a monument to him stands outside. A twelfth-century graffito scratched inside the wall, found during restoration, records the killing of Andrei Bogolyubsky and names the conspirators, which is a rare piece of contemporary documentation. The cathedral stands on the earth rampart of the old town beside two later churches.
What you actually see
- The 1152 fabric - dressed white limestone that has not been substantially rebuilt.
- The plainness - a single dome and almost no carving, unlike the later Vladimir churches.
- The graffito - a twelfth-century inscription naming Andrei Bogolyubsky's killers.
- The ramparts - the earth walls of the old town around the cathedral square.
When to go
May to September. One hour. The cathedral opens seasonally and in dry weather only.
Honest expectations
The interior opens only in the warm dry months and is often shut - the exterior is what most visitors get. Small and severe; it takes knowing what it is to appreciate. Pereslavl is two and a half hours from Moscow by bus with no train.
Nearby
Lake Pleshcheyevo and the Blue Stone are north; the town's monasteries ring the centre.
