Lofoten to the North Cape
Above the Arctic Circle by road and ferry, ending at the top of mainland Europe.
This is the other Norway: no fjord villages with orchards, just mountains dropping straight into cold water, fishing racks, and a road that keeps going long after it should have stopped. Eight days from Lofoten to Nordkapp is a real drive, and the two ways to do it are opposites. In summer the sun does not set and you can drive at two in the morning in full light. In late winter the same road is dark by three and the aurora is the reason you came.
The route, day by day
- Day 1-2 Lofoten Islands
The archipelago itself - fly to Leknes or drive up from Bodo with the ferry.
- Day 2 Reinebringen
The staircase to the view of Reine. It is 1,500 steps and it is not a stroll.
- Day 3-4 Senja
The island the Lofoten crowds skip. Sharper, emptier, and the road round it is the point.
- Day 5 Fjellheisen Tromso
The cable car above Tromso, for the shape of the coast and the town below it.
- Day 6 Alta Rock Art
Thousands of carvings, some 7,000 years old, on rock that was the shoreline when they were made.
- Day 7-8 Nordkapp
The cliff at the top. It is a car park, a globe sculpture and an expensive visitor centre - and the sea beyond it is still worth the drive.
- Day 8 King Crab of Finnmark
In Finnmark, where the crab is an invasive species and the fishery is the local answer to it.

Getting around
A car, with several ferries. Distances are long and the road is single carriageway almost throughout - Tromso to Nordkapp alone is a full day. Winter driving here needs studded tyres and genuine confidence; if you do not have both, take a tour.
When to go
June to early August for the midnight sun, when the light never leaves and the roads are all open. Late February and March for the aurora with enough daylight to drive safely. December and January are dark almost around the clock.
Honest expectations
Nordkapp charges a substantial entry fee for a cliff, and in bad visibility you will pay it to look at fog. Lofoten in July has a parking and toilet problem it is openly struggling with - wild camping rules have tightened, so book. Everything is expensive and choices are few once you leave Tromso. The weather can close the E69 to Nordkapp entirely, in convoy or not at all.
