Breb

Breb sits in a fold of the hills below the Gutâi mountains and has become the village foreign visitors are sent to when they ask where old Maramureș still exists. The signs of it are ordinary rather than staged: tall carved oak gates in front of the houses, each with rope-twist and sun motifs cut into the posts, haystacks built around a central pole in the meadows, horse carts on the lanes, and a wooden church with a shingled spire. Scything, haymaking by hand and small-scale dairying continue because the plots are too small and steep for machinery, not as a performance for visitors. That said, the village has been discovered: guesthouses have multiplied, some houses have been bought by outsiders, and photographers arrive in numbers in summer. Staying overnight in a village household is the way to see it properly, since the days begin early and the light in the meadows is the point.

When to go

May to October, with haymaking from June to August and the best colour in October. Winter has its own appeal with snow on the shingles but services are limited. Sunday mornings bring the village to church in traditional dress in some households.

Honest expectations

This is a working village, not an open-air museum, and residents are not exhibits: ask before photographing people, gates and yards. Tourism has changed it, with new build and guesthouse signs among the old houses. Facilities are minimal and roads are rough. Some visitors expect more uniformity than a real village provides.
